Why a tall club?

The central purpose of the tall club is to get people of above average height together to socialize and to promote tall awareness. We do this through social activities that are sponsored by members and promoted on the club website, email and special mailings. Social activities provide an outlet to celebrate our uniqueness. Something that vertically challenged people will never understand, but something special happens when you are in a group of people where you can talk eye-to-eye. This is only possible with the tall club!

What does the tall club do?

Simply stated, the club does whatever the members want to do! The normal club activities include house parties, dine-outs, hikes, walks, skiing, snowshoeing, bike rides, dinner/dance parties at local clubs, movie nights, cook-outs, etc. There is no end to the events that might appear on the calendar. Once you are a member, you can put your favorite on the event calendar.

How did the Tall Club of Salt Lake get started?

This was not the first attempt at a tall club in the area. People tried in the ߣ70’s and again in the early ‘90’s to get a tall club started in Salt Lake, but couldn’t make it happen. Ron Smith was president to South Bay Tall Club (now called Tall Club of Silicon Valley, TCSV) in 1993 during a temporary work assignment. He returned to Salt Lake in 1994 and considered starting a club. It wasn’t until after Ron’s divorce and Marcia Nordquist, TCSV member, came to Salt Lake in 1999 that the idea really took hold. Marcia temporarily moved to Salt Lake to support special training for her daughter. Before Marcia moved to Salt Lake, a mutual TCSV friend, Dennis Thorne, introduced Marcia to Ron through email. After Marcia arrived in the summer of 1999, Marcia and Ron attended a couple functions with the Utah Professional Guild. At one of these events in July of 1999, Marcia talked to Ron about the wonders of a tall club and how much she missed the tall friendships and activities. This brought back fond tall club memories for Ron. Together they decided to start a tall club. Ron focused on the club infrastructure, business license, website, publicity, business cards, TCI contact and the like. Marcia focused on the social calendar and pulling together club events. The first event was held at Chevy’s on August 26, 1999.

In the months that followed that first event, Dale Kennett, Lyla Steed, Karen Buzanoski, David Loflin, Paula George, Glenn Clapp, Cara Erickson, Matt Arnold, Lynne Cluff, Phil Brewster, Valerie Prisbrey, Kelli Reeves, and Tina Lang joined the club as charter members making enough members to become part of Tall Clubs International. It’s only through the help of these people and the people that continue to join and support the Tall Club of Salt Lake that makes the organization work.

The Tall Club of Salt Lake became a member of Tall Clubs International at the convention in July 2000 in Atlanta. Ron attended the convention and received, on behalf of Marcia and all the Tall Club of Salt Lake members, formal congratulations from other TCI clubs.

How do I get started with the Tall Club of Salt Lake?

It’s very easy to get started with the club. First, get on the mailing list by submitting the online membership application or leaving your information on the club message service, (801) 539-8255. This will insure you are up-to-date with the latest events. Next, review the event calendar and find an event that sounds fun to you. Finally, attend the event! It’s that easy.

Some people find it difficult to get out and meet new people. Don’t let this bother you. We all went through this as well. You might consider contacting the host/hostess or a club officer before the event to make sure they know you are coming. This allows them to keep an eye out for you and make sure you are introduced to other members. Another idea is to bring a friend with you as support. Your friend does not have to meet the height requirements.

Some events are large. Some events are small. Every event is different in one way or another. Attend a couple of events before deciding about the club. Once you experience the unique sensation of being in a crowd of all tall people, you will want to become an active member.

May I bring a guest to an event? What if they aren’t that tall?

Yes, you are welcome to bring guests to events, unless the event is marked as a “Closed” event for members only. Your guest does not have to meet the height requirement. The guest would pay non-member price if required.

What are the height requirements to join the Tall Club of Salt Lake?

Women have to be at least 5”10” and men at least 6’2”. A club officer measures people in their stocking feet.

What is the gender mix of the club?

The names in the club database are pretty much a 50/50 mix between male and females. However, the gender mix at the events varies from activity to activity. You need to attend a few events to figure out which ones are best for you.

What is the age of the club?

The club does not track age of its members or prospects. However, most people are in the 30’s and 40’s with some in the 20’s and 50’s. People must be 21 to join the club. The club is anxious to have a person in their 20’s or early 30’s step forward to really promote the club with the younger crowd. If you are interested, please contact the club president.

How many people are in the club?

The Tall Club of Salt Lake is a relatively new club. It continues to expand as the word gets out and more and more people learn about the club. There are well over 150 names on the mailing list. A more important question is, “Do people have fun and meet new (tall) people?” The answer to that question is a definite –YES!

What is the ice breaker question to use at a Tall Club event?

The question is easy, “How did you hear about the Tall Club?” Remember this is a question to break the ice and get the conversation going. You just can’t say, “I read about it in the Event Weekly” period. You need to open up and tell us more! Be prepared to tell the group where you were and what you were doing when you discovered the ad in the newspaper. Tell us what you thought when you first realized that you met the height qualifications. Did you start laughing and think it was a joke? Did it bring back memories of being called “Shorty” as a six-foot 15 year old and that you now realize from the ad that other people had the same experience? Use the opportunity to tell people about your first event and something about yourself. Use the question to get to know other people in the club. Ask the club president and see what answer you get.

Meeting these objectives will not be possible without financial viability that comes from club dues.

The club has certain financial obligations that must be paid like the PO Box, club phone, website, postage, business cards and printing. Portions of the club dues go to cover these expenses.
Only club members can be on the board of directors, vote at business meetings, and take part in running the club. The voting members decide the general direction of the club and how to run the club. Participating on the board of directors adds a different dimension to the club and is a great way to meet people.

Being a member of the Tall Club of Salt Lake entitles you to membership in Tall Clubs International. This means that members can attend TCI weekends, TCI convention and access “members only” portion of the TCI website.
Portions of the membership dues go directly to TCI and helps support international tall awareness.
Non-members pay additional entry fees into club events. This alone will pay for the Tall Club of Salt Lake membership.
Female members automatically receive an email alias through the TallSaltLake.com website. Male members have this as an option.

What can I do to help the club?

Being a normal member is rewarding enough for some, but the club always needs more people to help. Don’t leave the work to everyone else, GET INVOLVED! Getting involved with the planning, events and membership is a great way to meet people and expand your network of tall friends. It’s also easy. One of the easiest ways to get involved is to attend a business meeting, listen, comment, and provide ideas. Another idea is to just ask the host/hostess at any event what you can do to help, show up early and help setup or stay late and help cleanup. Another idea is to talk to the club president about possible openings on the board or areas that require additional hands. There is always work to do to keep our social organization running smoothly! After you catch the tall fever, you will ultimately want to be part of the board of directors and run for club president. Check out the club bylaws for the election process and more information. The elections are held in December with the new board taking office on the first of January. A person must hold one of the other board positions before running for club president.

Why is the Tall Club of Salt Lake a not-for-profit instead of a non-profit corporation?

The Tall Club of Salt Lake is a not-for-profit corporation. It is a social club with the goal to bring tall people together. It is not-for-profit meaning that all the money generated by the club goes back into the club. To be a non-profit (tax deductible, 501(c)) corporation, a group has to perform charity work that off-loads a government function like feeding the homeless. Even though we intend to do some civic work in the future, donate money to Marfan research, and provide a small scholarship, we do not off-load the government. We are a social club! This means that club dues and money given to the tall club are not tax deductible. If you are interested in donating money as a tax deduction, please contact the Tall Clubs International Foundation. It is a 501(c) corporation.

Our club has decided to focus on providing this information through the website and email. I see other TCI clubs elect a King and Queen each year. Does Tall Club of Salt Lake do this?

The Tall Club of Salt Lake is a new club. So far, the board has decided not to have a King and Queen. The board can decide at anytime to have these club functions.

I see other TCI clubs sponsor a scholarship for a tall high school student. What about TCSL?

The Tall Club of Salt Lake plans to provide a small yearly scholarship to a tall high school student. This award winner will then be eligible to receive one of the scholarships from Tall Clubs International. How does the club promote Marfan Syndrome awareness?

Marfan is the charity promoted by tall clubs because one of the signs of Marfan is a tall, disproportionate body structure. The Tall Club of Salt Lake sponsors events throughout the year to promote Marfan Syndrome awareness and help raise donations for Marfan research.

The club owns a couple of video tapes about Marfan and connective tissue disorders. Contact the director of special projects to borrow the tapes and other Marfan information.

The board can decide at anytime to have these club functions. I see other TCI clubs sponsor a scholarship for a tall high school student. What about TCSL? The Tall Club of Salt Lake plans to provide a small yearly scholarship to a tall high school student. This award winner will then be eligible to receive one of the scholarships from Tall Clubs International. Marfan is the charity promoted by tall clubs because one of the signs of Marfan is a tall, disproportionate body structure. The Tall Club of Salt Lake sponsors events throughout the year to promote Marfan Syndrome awareness and help raise donations for Marfan research.
